Guide to Hiking Rainbow Falls in Mammoth

Named after the many rainbows that appear through the mist of water on water collision, Rainbow Falls is also the highest waterfall on the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River at 101 feet.

Guide to Waterfall: Rainbow Falls is a fairly novice 2.5 miles hike from the trailhead at Devil’s Postpile National Monument in Mammoth Lakes.

Location: Fortunately, all of the trails are well-marked and easy to follow. To get to the falls follow the Devil’s Postpile National Monument sign for half of a mile and continue on the path marked Rainbow Falls Trailhead for the next two miles.

Elevation: Luckily, there isn’t a significant elevation gain or drop on this hike, making it a fairly moderate hike.

Public Services: On this hike, there are a number of public services available ie parking, waste management, public restrooms, and a public telephone booth.

Necessities: Don’t forget comfortable shoes to hike in, sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun, bug spray as a precaution, and your camera to capture the essence of this natural wonder.
